Track lighting has quietly become the most useful system in modern interiors, and it is still bought badly more often than not. People order heads without checking the track type, or fit a two-metre run with three spots and wonder why the room looks patchy, or aim everything straight down and lose the entire advantage of a system whose whole point is that it aims.
It is worth understanding properly, because when it is planned well it does things no fixed fixture can.

Compatibility first: track types are not interchangeable
This is the thing to settle before anything else, because getting it wrong means the heads physically will not fit.
Two-wire track carries a single circuit. Every head on the run switches together. Simple, cheap, fine for most domestic uses.
Three-wire and four-wire track carry multiple circuits on one physical rail, so heads can be assigned to different switches. In a shop or a gallery this is genuinely valuable — you can light merchandise on one circuit and general fill on another. At home it is usually more than you need, though it is worth having if you are running track across a large open-plan space.
Magnetic track is the newer system and works differently. A recessed or surface channel carries low-voltage supply, and heads attach magnetically anywhere along it, including spots, linear elements and small pendants in the same run. Repositioning takes seconds with no tools. It is more expensive and needs a driver sized to the total load, but for a room where you expect the layout to change it is much the better system.
Crucially, these are not cross-compatible. Heads from one system do not fit another, and even within a category, connector profiles vary between manufacturers. Buy the track and the heads together, from the same range, and if you are extending an existing run, identify what you already have before ordering.
The same applies to connectors. Straight joiners, L-pieces, T-pieces, flexible connectors and end caps are all range-specific. Sketch your layout, count the corners, and order the connectors at the same time as the track.
How many heads, and where they go
The most common error is too few heads on too long a run, which produces scallops of light with dark gaps between.
As a starting point, allow one head per 2 to 3 ft (60–90 cm) of track for general lighting. A 6 ft run wants three heads, four if the ceiling is high. For accent lighting where you are picking out specific objects, spacing follows the objects rather than the track — you might have two heads on a 6 ft run and that is correct.
Position the track itself rather than centring it by default. For lighting a wall — artwork, shelving, a feature surface — the track should run parallel to that wall at a distance of roughly one-third the ceiling height out from it. With a 9 ft ceiling, that puts the track about 3 ft from the wall. This gives you a sensible aiming angle, which matters more than it sounds.
Beam angle, the specification people skip
Beam angle describes how wide the cone of light is, and it changes what a fixture is good for more than wattage does.
- 15–24 degrees (spot) — tight pool. For picking out a single object, a sculpture, a small painting.
- 25–40 degrees (narrow flood) — the versatile middle. Most useful for artwork and retail display.
- 40–60 degrees (flood) — general illumination and washing a wall.
- 60 degrees and above (wide flood) — ambient fill across a room.
A useful mental model: the pool of light roughly doubles in width every time you double the distance. A 24-degree head at 8 ft throws a pool a little over 3 ft across. The same head at 12 ft throws about 5 ft. If you are lighting a specific object, work out the distance first and then choose the angle.
Mixing angles on one run is normal and desirable. Two tight spots on artwork plus two floods for fill is a far better setup than four identical heads.

Higher-output COB heads suit retail and high ceilings. In a domestic room they are usually more than you need.
The 30-degree aiming rule
For lighting artwork or any vertical surface, aim the head at roughly 30 degrees from vertical.
The reasoning is practical. Steeper than 30 and the light rakes across the surface, exaggerating texture and canvas weave, and it puts a hard shadow under the frame. Shallower than 30 and you get reflected glare bouncing off glazed or varnished surfaces straight into the viewer's eyes, plus the shadow of anyone standing in front of it.
Thirty degrees is the angle that lights the surface evenly, avoids the reflection, and clears the head of a person standing at normal viewing distance. It is the single most useful number in track lighting.
Aim after installation, with the room furnished and the artwork hung. Aiming an empty room is guesswork.
Wattage, output and colour
Track heads are typically 6W to 40W in LED. For domestic use, 7W to 15W per head covers almost everything. The 30W and 40W COB heads are built for retail and high ceilings, and in a normal room they are simply too much.
Colour temperature follows the room. 2700K for living spaces, 3000K for kitchens, 3000K to 4000K in retail depending on the merchandise. For anything lighting artwork, or clothing, or food, specify CRI 90 or better — accent lighting exists to make things look right, and a low-CRI head defeats the purpose entirely.
Check dimmability at the point of order. Many track heads are dimmable and many are not, and mixing both types on one circuit causes problems.
Where track earns its place
Rooms with no ceiling rose. Track needs one supply point and distributes from there, which makes it the pragmatic answer in a room with awkward or absent existing wiring.
Art and collections. The ability to re-aim when something moves is the entire argument. Any fixed fixture becomes wrong the moment you rehang.
Kitchens. Track along the line of a worktop, aimed at the counter rather than the floor, lights the work surface without the shadow you get from a central ceiling light and your own body.
Sloped and beamed ceilings. Track handles geometry that pendants cannot.
Retail and studios. Where the layout changes regularly, the flexibility pays for itself quickly.
Where it is a poor choice: as the sole light source in a bedroom or living room, where multiple directional sources feel restless rather than restful. Track works best as one layer among several, not as a replacement for all of them.

Ordering: what people forget
Track systems come as components, and a partial order is a stalled installation. Before checkout, confirm you have:
- Track in the right total length, allowing for cutting waste.
- The correct number of heads for the run.
- A live end feed — the piece that connects mains to the track. Easy to forget and nothing works without it.
- End caps for both ends.
- Connectors for every corner and joint in your layout.
- Mounting hardware suited to your ceiling type.
- A driver of adequate capacity, if you are using a magnetic or low-voltage system.
Track can usually be cut to length, but not all types can, and cutting affects the conductor ends. Check before assuming, and if you need an exact length, ask us before ordering.

Rails, joiners and connectors are range-specific. Sketch the layout and count the corners before ordering.
Installation
Track is hardwired and should be installed by a qualified electrician working to your local regulations. Two points worth raising with them in advance: the ceiling fixing needs to suit the substrate, since a long loaded track run is heavier than people expect; and the supply point position determines where the live end feed goes, which in turn constrains the layout. Agree the supply position before the track is ordered, not after.
